Kirk E. Kooker, DDS is a Carrollton dentist who specializes in a wide range of affordable and excellent dentistry services such as cosmetic and restorative dentistry. We aim to keep patient’s in the know about latest dental practices and to help them have healthy teeth for a lifetime. Common diseases like gum disease and gingivitis can plague patients and harm their teeth and mouth.

Gum disease happens when plaque and tartar stick to the teeth, causing bacteria to eat away at teeth and gums. Gingivitis can be hereditary. Our Carrollton dentist recommends annual cleanings at least once a year since their teeth are more susceptible to decay and disease. Tooth decay can form when bacteria inside the mouth creates sugars that decay teeth. However, proper brushing and flossing can get in between gums and teeth, where bacteria is most likely to hide. Gum disease prevention is best treated with regular brushing and flossing and with annual cleanings, which help to reach deep within the pockets of the gums. The bacteria that forms plaque and tartar hides there and needs to be removed before it causes irreversible cavities. Bacteria contributes to periodontal disease, which can cause tooth loss and severe damage to the gums and bone structures of the teeth.

Our Carrollton dentist utilizes special tools for cleaning and the latest in dental technology during your visit. If a deeper cleaning is needed to remove bacteria and clean the teeth, we may recommend a periodontal scaling. These types of procedures, also called a root planing and scaling, are recommended for pockets that go 4mm or below the gum. Regular brushing and flossing cannot reach these areas, which is where our office comes in and our dentist gets in deep to flush the bacteria out. After the procedure, we recommend sticking to regular oral care habits and having a few more cleanings throughout the year in order to make sure the pockets are cleaned and the periodontal disease has regressed.
